Two friends, Rs 20,000 investment and Rs 23 crore leaf plate business

Two friends, Rs 20,000 investment and Rs 23 crore leaf plate business

February 23, 2024

An award-winning business idea at a B-School is today an eco-friendly enterprise with 50% revenues from exports. Amardeep Bardhan and Vaibhav Jaiswal started Prakritii while doing their MBA in 2010, and its areca palm leaf plates now sell across the world

Primarily, leaves of sal tree or areca palm (supari) are used to make leaf plates which have been used in India for centuries. Being biodegradable, they do not cause pollution and also provide employment to local communities, especially tribal people, who prepare plates, bowls and cups using these leaves. Using leaf plates promotes organic life as the disposed plates turn into compost over time.

“We zeroed in on areca palm. The primary advantage of areca palm is that it is cultivated widely in India,” says Amardeep.

“Our country has 75 percent of the world’s areca nut plantation and whatever is made out of these leaves is an Indian monopolistic product. There is no competition from China as raw material is unavailable there,” says Amardeep.

The states with major areca nut plantations are Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Assam and Kerala. Since Amardeep is from Tinsukia in Assam, the two friends started meeting small local farmers to understand about areca nut leaves, their collection and the manufacturing of plates while still doing their MBA in 2010.areca palmAreca palm leaves, the raw material, (left) and the ready product, leaf plates (right)

The areca palm leaf is the protective sheath that covers the fruit during its development and falls to the ground when the fruit matures. The sheath is sturdy and smooth. They are transported to local units, stored, cleaned, and pressed into various shapes using machines.

“Areca nut leaf plates are made locally in Assam using indigenous machines. But there was no innovation in designs or shapes,” says Vaibhav.

“Since we did not have huge amounts to invest in machines, we decided to invest Rs 20,000 in making moulds and dyes for various sizes and types of leaf plates,” Vaibhav says.

They tied up with local manufacturers to produce the plates and started marketing them in north India under the Prakritii brand. “In 2011, we also started exporting small consignments to the US market,” he adds.

Fine-tuning the business model

Once the product began to get traction and recognition among its handful of buyers, Amardeep and Vaibhav realised the limitation of working in Assam. Heavy rainfall leads to a shortage of raw materials during rains. It also halts production and can also cause fungal growth in the products. Areca palm is not treated as a cash crop in Assam and often the quality of leaves is not good.

“So in 2012, we shifted our manufacturing base to Tamil Nadu which has abundant sunlight and the leaves are bigger and brighter,” says Vaibhav.

They registered their firm AV Prakritii International Pvt Ltd and tied up with local leaf plate manufacturers in Coimbatore. “We invested in dyes and machines for contract manufacturing. From 2012, we started getting good orders from Delhi and Punjab,” Amardeep says.work on at prakritiiPrakritii follows the hub and spoke model of leaf plate manufacturing. Pic: Prakritii

Their first major breakthrough came in 2013 when Prakritii started exporting products to the European market.

“The first order from Germany, in 2013, was a small consignment but led us to tie-ups with supermarkets and large distributors in Europe where users were eco-conscious and valued eco-friendly products like ours,” says Vaibhav.

However, there was not much acceptance in India due to the popularity enjoyed by plastic. “Till about 2014, we used to export 70 percent of our products while the rest were sold domestically,” he adds.

By 2016, Vaibhav and Amardeep had found the model that would help their sustainable business expand capacity rapidly. They opted for the hub and spoke model where a central unit works with smaller units spread over a wide area. “We do capital investments, take up the place, put up machines, moulds, shed and hire local people for production. We forge partnership agreements and give them work orders,” Amardeep says.

The production is done at the smaller units, managed and operated by locals, most of whom are women. “The products are brought back to the main unit and checked for quality,” he adds.

The cost of setting up the main hub unit is around Rs25 lakh to Rs30 lakh while the spoke units require an investment of Rs5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh.

“We invest in the main unit and the locals make investments in the sub-units. We help them with technical know-how, and getting loans and subsidies on machines, shed etc.,” he says. women entrepreneurshipPrakritii promotes women entrepreneurship through its sub-units. Pic: Prakritii

“We promote women entrepreneurship at these units. Prakritii gives them work orders and they sell the products to us. The payment is fixed on a per-piece basis,” Amardeep says. The model works well as the locals lack technical knowledge, innovation, and access to markets, which is provided by Prakritii. They are also assured of work and income throughout the year. In turn, Prakritii can procure good quality products as per its requirements.

Currently, Prakritii has one main unit and 18 sub-units in Karnataka and another main unit in Tamil Nadu with 14 sub-units. “In 2017-18, we started the Karnataka unit and expanded our export market beyond Germany and France. We tied up with other large distributors in Europe and Australia,” Amardeep says.

Rapid expansion

While plates and bowls from areca nut are the primary products, Prakritii also offers complimentary products like paper glasses, and bamboo stirrers and skewers, which are made at a unit in Dehradun.prakritii cutlery and leaf platesPrakritii offers areca palm leaf plates, bowls, wooden and bamboo cutlery and paper glass. In the pre-Covid period, around 2018-19, there was a growing awareness to reduce the use of plastic in India and that led to significant expansion of the domestic market for Prakritii.

“By 2019-20, our revenue split from domestic sales and export became 50:50. We expect to close this fiscal (FY23) with Rs 23 crore in revenues. The target for next fiscal is Rs25 crore,” Amardeep says.

Outside India, the biggest geographies for Prakritii are Europe and the US. “Even during COVID, we were receiving orders and the market did shrink a little post-COVID but still things were good.”

In Europe, energy prices went up due to the Russia-Ukraine war which resulted in the lower consumption of these articles as these are not primary goods. Now, markets are looking up again. “We also got good support from the domestic market after the July 2022 ban on single-use plastic. As awareness about plastic pollution increases, there will be more demand for eco-friendly and sustainable products like ours,” he says.

In India, Prakritii sells through supermarket chains, online marketplaces, and retailers. It also has contracts with catering agencies. “We also have a huge chunk of institutional sales, aviation catering and tie-ups with five-star hotels for outdoor events,” Amardeep adds.

Disposable cutlery playing key role amid pandemic

Disposable cutlery playing key role amid pandemic

July 07, 2023

The worldwide pandemic has created a shift in how and in what we eat.

New Delhi: At the absolute starting point of this pandemic, we understood the significance of disposables and the huge need for dispensable cutlery and crockery.

The worldwide pandemic has created a shift in how and in what we eat. As eateries across the Capital offer takeout in such troublesome crossroads, the methods for expendable bundling which has ended up being outstanding amongst other benefits to people in general. However, even now, a portion of cafes serve clients in plastic utensils and takeout boxes, and compostable cups.

Undeniably this pandemic gave a colossal ascent to the utilisation of expendable items. People in limited numbers are invited to homes during the lockdown and ordering in, ensured cafes use disposables for conveyance purposes.

Coronavirus stays on plastic surfaces longer than most different materials, thus natural flatware disposables give a better outcome in our everyday lives. The advantageous of disposables gives us the opportunity of eating any place, being more secure and eating cleaner.

Various factors have driven people to use disposables, and this has had a significant influence. It has been widely observed that device reprocessing is frequently associated with residual contamination, which is indeed left by reprocessing agents that fail to reach difficult-to-reach parts of reusable equipment.

The rising demand for disposables like Areca/palm leaf plates, espresso cups and plates made of bamboo and wooden cutlery is best suited in such difficult situations. The cheap availability of disposable cutlery makes it a great option for the general public, including those who are infected with the virus.

Benefits of Eating or Using Areca Plates for Covid Patients

Benefits of Eating or Using Areca Plates for Covid Patients

July 07, 2023

By Vaibhav Jaiswal & Amardeep Bardhan, Co-Founders of Prakritii Cultivating Green

A nobleman once said: “If you cannot RECYCLE or REUSE, then quickly REFUSE”, whereupon we get the thought of how harmful the usage of plastics is often to the mother earth and even worse for the people living in it. Plastics mostly contribute to heating and create an area of high concern for one and all. Usually, when plastic is dumped in landfills, it interacts with water and forms hazardous chemicals and they degrade the water quality. The wind carries and deposits plastic from one place to another, increasing the land litter. This has made a high-risk impact on our lives and existence. The usage of plastic tableware as per tradition has been a way of inclination towards the hazardous happenings for the mere future.

Given the outbreak of the covid-19 second wave in the country, it is critical to preserve food cleanliness. As a result, the use of areca leaf plates has been proposed as a remedy to this eating problem. Areca leaf plates, also known as areca nut leaf plates, are high-quality biodegradable plates made from areca leaves. Areca leaf bowls and plates are made by collecting the best specimens of areca leaves that cover areca fruits and using them to make these products. The benefit of utilizing areca leaf plates, bowls, and eating utensils is that they don’t contain any chemicals, making them completely safe for all users. These goods are made using a detailed and comprehensive manufacturing procedure. The tableware will compost organically in about two months, and it will decompose naturally in another two or three months.

Why Packaging will become mainstream in 2021

Why Packaging will become mainstream in 2021

July 07, 2023

2020 has been the year of surprises and the era of new trends being born. One of them is the introduction of cloud kitchens which is definitely here to stay. Another form of it that already existed was home deliveries from restaurants considered as a substitute and not a necessity for the restaurant business. But 2020 became the year of delivery with big and small restaurant brands either being bullish on delivery or opening dark kitchen/ cloud kitchen as an option to survive the lockdown losses.

The cloud kitchen model has various pros that work best in the industry's favour. For example, Swiggy and Zomato didn't play a big role earlier in the hospitality industry but have now become significant platforms for the growth and visibility of cloud kitchens. Cloud kitchens have lower operations costs along with saving a lot of money as you don't invest in large premises which is definitely profitable than a restaurant. In a nutshell, because of their low-cost maintenance and broader reach via online visibility, they are far profitable than restaurants. And, with delivery taking the centre stage, it is also important that restaurants and delivery players also focus on packaging of food and creating the same experience at home via delivery.

“Packaging is becoming the new storefront. People love visiting new restaurants and share their opinions on the interiors, ambience, and customer experience. With social distancing, in-store experiences have taken a backseat and food packaging becomes the new customer touch-point,” shared Karan Singla, Head Operations- India Business Unit, Rebel Foods who believed that people will take note of great packaging experience; share it on social media making it a good conversation starter.

Also, restaurants and delivery players are adopting innovative ideas, trends to serve their customers the best way.  And, as hygienic food practices have always been a part of a healthy lifestyle. Keeping in view the current situation where in the country is facing a serious outburst of the covid-19 second wave in the Delhi-NCR region, it becomes utmost important to maintain hygiene in food consumption.

Given the situation, many leading food delivery platforms including Swiggy are now tying up with Prakritii Cultivating Green for disposable cutlery and mitigate plastic waste.

The patients of covid-19 are being served with the simplest quality of food and proper resources for cutlery. The large expansion of “Covid Tiffin” has been introduced to the general public so that the environment-friendly method might be accessible. As per resources, Swiggy runs an initiative called “Swiggy Packaging” which assists with paper and glass as alternative options.

“Episodically, Covid is fixing practically everything we have done on the disposal of single-utilized plastic and we should find some alternatives to it before it goes much worse. A ton of Covid-19 patients grumbled that restaurants have been declining their food orders in light of them testing positive and their housekeepers had quit coming; the patients were themselves too powerless to even consider cooking. That is the thing that pushed us to step in,” added Vaibhav Jaiswal, Director & Co-Founder of Prakritii.

Packaging v/s The Food

“We are very unique and distinctive when it comes to packaging. Our starters/ Tikkas are tightly tucked in earthen pots and items like Biryani comes in Mutka which you can reheat by placing a candle below. For the main course items, we use paper/ cardboard containers and other packaging alternatives to ensure heat insulation and regulate temperature. We also use bottled jars for salad, raita and our signature desertand test tubes for chutney,” said Ishaan Kapoor- Founder, Madam Curry.

Besides this, safety will also be of the utmost concern for customers. To address this, brand like Rebel Foods have also introduced – ‘UV sure bag’. Food which is ordered on any of the Rebel Foods brands will be put in an outer bag, which is run through a UV chamber, deployed at all partner kitchens, before being handed over to the delivery person. The UV chamber disinfects both the outer and inner surfaces of the bags making sure that it’s completely safe.

Hence, we can say that restaurants and delivery kitchens will co-exist and grow together.

Rejecting the utilization of single-use plastics can bring a colossal change & a climate well-disposed atmosphere

From the previous decade, there has been a huge load of ecological debasement nearly making a daily routine undermining calamity for the living. The decrease is just conceivable through the use of climate amicable disposables, which are effectively expanded by the youth of today. They are unadulterated and deteriorate henceforth don't add to the natural contamination. These things are generally biodegradable and are regular items.

There are several, who lack awareness, continue to threaten the environment with plastic disposables. Abundant measures of advancements and examinations have been taken to trade these plastic disposables with different types of disposables that are cent per cent eco-friendly, biodegradable, compostable, and have been declared as favourable to earth and the environment. With the worldwide environmental change crisis, water emergency and contamination can't bear to initiate it wrong this time.

From the time of the development of plastics, it was envisioned that the plan is of saving trees by supplanting paper. Numerous organisations have now gotten more careful and outrageous with their practices and are discovering better approaches to turn out to be more cautious towards the climate and help tackle the environment. An enormous number of restaurants and cafes are currently turning on the use of eco-friendly disposables to contribute to the salvage of the environment. These disposables incorporate espresso cups made of bamboo, areca/palm leaf plates, and wooden cutlery.

Reusing paper and saving the trees through the development of plastics was a wrong decision that the entire age has been looking through for countless years. The idea gave the ascent of plastics and people a reliance on it. We need to venture out back around the economy following the progression of supportability i.e refuse, reduce and reuse, before recycling and remove. Maintainability implies diminishing our carbon impression and holding nature's cycle to get back to earth whatever we devour.

Thus, here are a few thoughts that are showing the right expectation during this time, however with misinformed decisions:

1. Disposables at Eat-In: There is no sense in serving disposables for the feast. Water burned-through for clothing dishes is far more than that for securing, assembling, transportation, and purchasing disposables, at that point isolating, gathering, and preparing these.

2. Trouble Fertilising the Soil: Most biodegradables, compostables, and disposables require industry conditions to encourage treating the soil, which is insofar as isolated appropriately.

3. Areca Plates: These are sans substance and normal yet fertilising the soil requires around a half year and extra endeavors like destroying.

4. Plastic Packaging: Chips, bread rolls, and a lot more are sold for many years yet after the plastic attack, it gets unbelievable to pack each roll without the wrap. The low-esteem blended material is utilised, the more tip-top the roll or cake is the more the plastic folds over it. The wraps increment the period however, this infers more lifeless items.

5. Conveying Cutlery: Most individuals like to arrange food either at the workplace or from home, the two spots can have cutlery sets. Some like fresh menus even cause cutlery fabricated from areca. It's nice to find some online goliaths giving clients the determination to stay away from cutlery conveyance, however, we wouldn't fret anything coming to our direction free. So how about we make it 'no cutlery' of course, and let individuals add it if it's required and pay a touch extra.

6. Paper Bags vs Reusables: Restaurants have begun giving paper packs for food conveyance yet why not simply have reusable packs, give just the food dabba to clients, and have your conveyance individual save the pack for the accompanying conveyance.

The beginning of a practical future can only begin from our end. At the point when most of us would begin rejecting the utilisation of single-use plastics can just bring about a colossal change and a climate well-disposed atmosphere. Change ought to be the root of the business plan. It winds up in close-to-home fulfillment and moves a few yet can't keep in sync with temperature change. Maintainability isn't a venture or mission - it’s an attitude, method of care utilisation, and possessing the maker's duty.

The green movement has prompted a flood of creative new eco-friendly options in contrast to customary bundling materials. From recyclable plastics to biodegradable holders, there is no limit to the choices accessible to the ecologically cognizant business. The investigation drew out the way that individuals are significantly very much aware of eco-friendly disposables in the present setting and with regards to cleanliness and bundling they lean toward biodegradable and compostable items which is an answer supplier to draw in purchasers. Since most reused bundling utilises environmentally friendly power and is biodegradable, moving to it will assist with limiting its carbon impression and advantage the climate over the long haul. Other than this, eco-friendly bundling can be helpful in brand building, diminishing creation costs, and being biodegradable.

6 things to note for environment-friendly disposables

6 things to note for environment-friendly disposables

July 07, 2023

By India Today Web Desk: In recent years, environmental degradation has been on the increase and it's an awfully important issue. Reducing pollution is through the utilization of environmentally friendly disposables. Eco-friendly disposables are thrown away after use, which can cause no harm to the environment.

They are completely pure and decompose faster hence don't contribute to environmental pollution. These things are mostly biodegradable and are natural products.

For decades, we have been polluting the environment with plastic disposables, obsessive about the environment.

Nowadays we examine many innovations to interchange plastic disposables with other forms of disposables that are eco-friendly, labelled as pro-earth, biodegradable, compostable, etc. With the global climate change emergency, water crisis and pollution can't afford to induce it wrong this time.

Many businesses in today's society have become more mindful of their practices and are finding new ways to become more eco-friendly and help tackle climate changes.

It's becoming increasingly common for cafes and restaurants around the world to be using these eco-friendly disposables. A number of these disposables include coffee cups made of bamboo, cornstarch plates, and wooden straws.

Sustainability means reducing our carbon footprint and retaining nature's cycle to return to earth whatever we consume. We want to travel back to a circular economy following the hierarchy of sustainability i.e Refuse, Reduce and Reuse, before Recycle and take away.

Here are few ideas for businesses that are showing the correct intent during this direction, but with misguided choices:

1. Disposables at dine-in

There is no sense in serving disposables for dine-in. Water consumed for laundry dishes is far but then that for procuring, manufacturing, shipping and buying disposables, then segregating, collecting and processing these.

2. Difficulty composting

Most of the biodegradables, compostables and disposables require industry conditions to urge composted, which are as long as segregated properly.

3. Areca plates

These are chemical-free and natural but composting these takes about six months and requires additional efforts like shredding.

4. Plastic packaging

Chips, biscuits and plenty of more are sold for hundreds of years but after the plastic invasion, it becomes unthinkable to pack every biscuit without the wrap.

The low-value the mixed material is employed, the more elite the biscuit or cake is the more the plastic wraps around it. The wraps increase the period, but this implies more stale products.

5. Delivering cutlery

Most people prefer to order food either at the office or from home, both places can have cutlery sets. Some like Fresh Menu even claim to own cutlery manufactured from cornstarch.

It's good to determine some online giants giving users the selection to avoid cutlery delivery, but we don't mind anything coming our way free. So let's make it 'no cutlery' by default, and let people add it if it's needed and pay a touch extra.

6. Paper bags vs reusables

Restaurants have started giving paper bags for food delivery but why not just have reusable bags, give only the food Dabba to customers and have your delivery person kept the bag for the following delivery.

We need to start out thinking of the full product cycle before calling something sustainable. Change must come from business design, right from inception.

A number of us refusing single-use can only bring forth most change. It ends up in personal satisfaction and inspires some but can't keep in step with temperature change.

Sustainability isn't a project or campaign. It's a mindset, way of mindful consumption, and owning the producer's responsibility.

Prakritii- Providing a substitute to eat in Green not just green

Prakritii- Providing a substitute to eat in Green not just green

July 07, 2023

New Delhi, 22nd February 2021 : Caring about the environment is, thankfully, becoming a norm as the environment is in a state that needs immediate attention. There is plenty of data being published through valid information and resources every day that keep shedding light on how much waste people produce, specifically plastic products and how this is adversely affecting our environment. In a day, the average human produces around 4.5 pounds of garbage. It is getting much harder to get rid of the amount of waste that is increasing with such an alarming rate.

It is so easy to pick up foam or paper plates or to use a to-go container when in a pinch but everything turns into waste once used and eventually end up in a landfill or in an animal’s habitat where it shouldn’t be. Regular paper plates can quickly get decomposed but it comes with the cost of cutting down trees and the foam plates and the plastic cutlery taking even longer to decompose.

Prakritii was incepted in 2011 with a unique concept to reduce the rapid rise in waste creation by using 100% biodegradable tableware and cutlery. The company uses naturally shed leaves from Areca (Palm) trees to make tableware which is eco-friendly and safe for the environment. With the aim to provide eco-friendly products to cutting down the rate at which pollution is destroying the environment, Prakritii endeavours to build a brand that resonates socially- responsible behaviour.

Vaibhav Jaiswal, Co- Founder & Director of Prakritii said; “I and Amardeep, Co-Founder of Prakritii, always wanted to start an enterprise that would not harm the ecological balance. We explored the options and concluded what we wanted. Eventually, we shaped our dream as “Prakritii – Cultivating Green” an idea which changed our life for good. We realised that cheap plastic and thermocol is the root cause of growing carbon footprints causing imbalance in the ecosystem. Industrialization has left us yearning for the time when we used to eat food on banana leaves. We thought on the similar lines and came up with the idea of making plates and other household items out of Areca Palm leaves. Thus, our business venture is based on a sustainable outlook towards the environment.”

Hospitality industry can profit in a big way by going green

Hospitality industry can profit in a big way by going green

July 07, 2023

An eco-friendly company, Prakritii uses naturally shed leaves from areca (palm) trees to make tableware that is safe for the environment. Its sole aim is to provide ecofriendly products to cut down the rate at which pollution is destroying the environment. In an exclusive interview with BIZZ BUZZ, Vaibhav Jaiswal, Director & Co-Founder of Prakritii Cultivating Green, says: "The Covid is the game-changer that leads to the paradigm shift from using re-useable crockery to eco-friendly tableware in the hospitality industry. Thus, the post Covid world will hold immerse opportunities for our business."

How did you begin your tryst with nature?

The idea behind the inception of Prakritii came into form in our graduation days. While in college, we noticed how human activities are adversely affecting the environment and realized the danger it will cause in the long run. Environmental pollution is a serious threat facing humanity and other life forms on our planet today. Plastic is one of the most harmful elements that is harming our environment. Plastics are non-biodegradable and stay in the environment for hundreds to thousands of years and trickle toxic substances into the groundwater. Biodegradable products can, therefore, reduce landfill mass by as much as 30 per cent. This gave us the thought of starting a venture that can be beneficial for the environment and profitable as well.

How did you zero in on environment-friendly disposables?

Witnessing the harm that plastic causes to the environment, we analyzed the ways it is consumed in large quantities as disposables. Prakritii was incepted in 2011 with a unique concept to reduce this waste creation by using 100 per cent biodegradable tableware and cutlery. The company uses naturally shed leaves from areca (palm) trees to make tableware that is eco-friendly and safe for the environment. With the aim to provide eco-friendly products to cut down the rate at which pollution is destroying the environment, Prakritii endeavours to build a brand that resonates with sociallyresponsible behavior.

How big is the biodegradable tableware market and what is the growth potential in the near future?

The biodegradable tableware market is on a growth streak as it is witnessing increasing popularity due to innovative and non-toxic tableware products. According to a report by Market Research Future, the biodegradable tableware market is projected to reach $990.6 million by 2025 at a CAGR of 5.98 per cent between 2019 and 2025. Due to the rise in pollution levels and plastic being a major source of this, people are increasingly becoming aware of the ill effects this will cause in the future.

Governments are also taking initiatives to restrict the use of plastic tableware. For instance, the Indian government has replaced plastic cutlery, teacups, and water bottles with steel and biodegradable products in all government offices.

When do you reckon the hospitality industry will be back to normal times?

The global pandemic has affected the hospitality industry as it has impacted the other sectors. The loss in terms of profit and employment is immense and it will take a long time for the demand to come back to its normal levels. Keeping in mind the long-term effects of the pandemic and the vaccination drive in progress, we expect a slow but steady revival in the industry.

What is your strategy during the Covid and post Covid?

As the company was zero debt and had strategically managed business in the past, reserves and surplus were used to hold the team together. During the entire period, no employees were sacked. Later, in the third and fourth quarters, as restrictions were liberalised, the market took its pace. Although the pace couldn't compensate for the loss incurred but helped in sustaining. The Covid is the game-changer that leads to the paradigm shift from using re-useable crockery to eco-friendly tableware in the hospitality industry. Thus, the post-Covid world will hold immerse opportunities for our business.

What kind of response you are expecting for your disposable environment-friendly cutlery post Covid?

The pandemic has created a positive outlook among people regarding disposable environment-friendly cutlery. In the past one year, we have seen a change in the attitude of people towards disposable cutlery. Zero contact is the main reason for this choice but what remains to be done is cutting the use of plastic and adapting to ecofriendly cutlery. The tableware by Prakritii from areca leaves is a better alternative that will mutually benefit the pandemic stuck population and the environment.

How does eco-friendly dinnerware benefit the environment, economy and society?

Businesses across the world have become more cautious in their practices and are finding new ways to become more eco-friendly and help tackle climate changes. Ecofriendly dinnerware holds the key to sustainable efforts enhancing both nature and the economy. It will thus help the environment by reducing the waste and eventually lead to a boost in the economy benefiting society. We are making something great from waste and creating a sustainable environment. Every technology, machine, the infrastructure of Prakritii Tableware made and developed in India thus we are promoting Swadeshi and adding to the GDP of the nation.

With Rs 20,000 duo builds an eco-friendly business and a Rs 18 crore turnover company

With Rs 20,000 duo builds an eco-friendly business and a Rs 18 crore turnover company

July 07, 2023

Their story can make a perfect Bollywood script. Two youngsters from diverse family backgrounds and hailing from different states became friends at Institute of Integrated Learning in Management University (IILM), Greater Noida, while doing their MBA.

In their MBA first year, Vaibhav Jaiswal and Amardeep Bardhan participated in an inter-collegiate business plan contest, and bagged the first prize for their eco-friendly plates made of areca palm leaves.

Vaibhav Jaiswal (right) and Amardeep Bardhan started Prakritii in 2011 with Rs 20,000 (Photos: Special Arrangement)

The duo went on to win more contests with the same product, competing against students from prestigious institutions such as BITS Pilani, the various IITs and IIMs, and eventually launched their own company with Rs 20,000 in 2011.

“We formulated a business plan for developing bio-degradable dinnerware using leaves of the areca palm trees and avoiding plastic and thermocol materials,” says Amardeep, who was just 21 when they started Prakritii - Cultivating Green.

Ten years later, they have grown into a Rs 18 crore turnover company with stakes in pharmaceuticals and FMCG exports as well. Prakritii was initially a partnership firm, but later became AV Prakritii International Private Limited in 2018.

With factories at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and Bhadravathi in Karnataka, today Prakritii produces around 75 varieties of dinnerware products, including plates, bowls, spoons, forks and knives.

Their products are exported to many countries such as USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Saudi Arabia.

How the duo built the company from scratch, after winning a series of college level business competitions, and making enough money in the form of cash prizes that took care of about 70 per cent of their tuition fees and all their recreational expenses, is an inspiring journey indeed.

Amardeep is a year younger to Vaibhav and hails from the small town of Tinsukia in Assam. His father passed away when his mother was 6-7 months pregnant and he grew up under a single parent.

“We were not financially strong. My mother was into accounts and worked with a private bank. She also gave home tuitions to make some extra money,” Amardeep remembers his struggling growing up years.

He did his schooling at Vivekananda Kendriya Vidyalaya in Tinsukia, and graduated in commerce from Tinsukia College in 2009.

Vaibhav hails from a well-to-do family in Varanasi. His father is a scrap trader. He studied at St John’s School in Varanasi and went to Delhi for doing his graduation in commerce from Bhagat Singh College.

It was Vaibhav who proposed the idea of plates made of areca plam leaves for the first business plan contest they entered in 2009.

In the following months till they completed graduation, Vaibhav and Amardeep participated in about 15-20 competitions held at various institutions and won prizes almost everywhere. In one of the contests they won, they were felicitated at a function attended by top dignitaries including Prince Charles.

Prakritii produces around 75 varieties of dinnerware products, including plates, bowls, spoons, forks and knives

“We stood either first or second at these contests and our product became very popular,” says Vaibhav. “We earned about 70 per cent of our college fees from the cash prizes and divided the money between us. We had a nice time splurging the money.”

Both got placed in good companies after graduation, but they left their jobs in less than six months and started Prakritii in 2011.

Since Assam had a number of betel nut trees, whose leaves were used to make their products, they set up the first unit at Tinsukia, Amardeep’s hometown, with two first generation machines.

“We received our first order worth Rs 11,000 from an NRI family in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, in 2011, before we had our organisation registered. Our first distributor is also from Kanpur,” says Vaibhav.

But they faced operational challenges at Tinsukia and decided to take over a sick unit in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, the next year and started production there.

“Our first year turnover was about Rs 6 lakh. It was Rs 20 lakh in the second year and it kept on increasing,” says Vaibhav.

They used blogs, Facebook, and other social media platforms to promote their products. They also got business from supermarkets and catering firms, besides getting leads from India Mart where they were listed.

Amardeep and Vaibhav with team members at their corporate office in Delhi

“I focused on export market and met officials at embassies. Each Embassy has a trade division and I used to approach them and give short presentations. One out of 20 visits would click, and we were happy with the results,” says Amardeep.

Business swelled in September 2014, when they started exporting. The first order worth Rs 90,000 came from Melbourne, Australia, which was followed by a bigger one, a full container shipment to a company based in Germany.

“We were to deliver 1.20 lakh plates in two months but we took four months to deliver. That order was worth Rs 15 lakh,” says Vaibhav. “Today, we export to around 18 countries.”

As an eco-friendly company, they don’t cut any trees and make their products from only naturally shed leaves. Their products are free of any chemicals.

“We are now an international brand,” says Vaibhav. “We meet all the European and US standards. We are assuming the market might be slow this year but it will pick up from next year.”

On the personal front, Amardeep, who is married and blessed with a son, enjoys playing badminton. Vaibhav is single, loves travelling, and likes to read fiction and biographies of successful people.

Plastic Vikalp Mela 2022

Plastic Vikalp Mela 2022

September 23, 2022

India has made a commitment to tackle the single-use plastic problem.
From 1st of July, 2022, India has banned the use of single-use plastics across the country. The aim of this ban is to reduce the amount of plastic waste that gets into our oceans and waterways, which can harm wildlife and humans alike.
The ban affects disposable items like straws, plastic straws, plates and cutlery, stirrers, trays are to name a few of the 19 items.

This week, the Delhi Government organized Plastic Vikalp Mela to promote the ban and to display the alternative available to these 19 SUP. The move comes after several other cities around the world have made similar moves in recent years to reduce their consumption of disposable plastics.

While this may seem like an extreme measure, it is actually a very smart move for India's environment—and one that could help lower Delhi's pollution levels even further!

Thanks to #DPCC #delhigovernment #Department of Environment for this showcase, supporting the plastic ban and organizing Plastic Vikalp Mela.

With Rs 20,000 duo builds an eco-friendly business and a Rs 18 crore turnover company

With Rs 20,000 duo builds an eco-friendly business and a Rs 18 crore turnover company

September 23, 2022

Their story can make a perfect Bollywood script. Two youngsters from diverse family backgrounds and hailing from different states became friends at Institute of Integrated Learning in Management University (IILM), Greater Noida, while doing their MBA.

In their MBA first year, Vaibhav Jaiswal and Amardeep Bardhan participated in an inter-collegiate business plan contest, and bagged the first prize for their eco-friendly plates made of areca palm leaves.

INVESTING RS 20K, THESE ENTREPRENEURS MADE ECO-FRIENDLY PLATES USING ARECA LEAVES.

INVESTING RS 20K, THESE ENTREPRENEURS MADE ECO-FRIENDLY PLATES USING ARECA LEAVES.

September 05, 2021

Amardeep Bardhan and Vaibhav Jaiswal started Prakritii Cultivating Green in 2012 in Delhi. They began sourcing areca nut leaves from Assam to make biodegradable plates in their Tamil Nadu facility.

Investing Rs 20k, these entrepreneurs made eco-friendly plates using areca leaves. Now their business records Rs 18 Cr revenue

As they graduated from IILM Graduate School Of Management in Gurugram, Amardeep Bardhan and Vaibhav Jaiswal came up with a business idea. The duo felt strongly about the adverse environmental impact created by the use of plastic and polymer plates. Looking to address the issue, Amardeep and Vaibhav decided to make areca leaf plates as a viable alternative to plastic plates. They decided to source the leaves from Amardeep’s home state of Assam, which had an abundance of areca leaves, to make eco-friendly and, disposable plates. This eventually led them to start Prakritii Cultivating Green in 2012, which was incubated in Assam and operated from Delhi.

Amardeep tells SMBStory:

“We arranged resources on a small scale and began Prakritii with Rs 20,000. Setting up a manufacturing unit in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, we began producing areca nut leaf plates in various shapes and sizes using the leaves sourced from Assam.”

Initially, the duo sold their plates to caterers and event organisers who would use the products at large gatherings and parties. After seeing the growing popularity, they expanded their product portfolio to include eco-friendly cutlery, glasses, stirrers, etc.

Today, Prakritii is seeing an annual turnover of Rs 18 crore, and is generating employment for 120 people directly and for 700 people indirectly, the founders claim.

The eco-friendly advantage

Plastic plates are non-biodegradable and take hundreds, and sometimes thousands of years to decompose. All the while, they release toxic substances into the soil and groundwater.

Plates made from biodegradable materials such as areca leaves do not damage the environment. Vaibhav, explaining Prakritii’s range of tableware made from areca leaves, says:

“Our range is 100 percent free from chemicals, lacquers, glues, bonding agents, or anything toxic that harms food and our environment. We make our areca leaf products using only steam, heat, and pressure.”

He adds that Prakritii’s plates are made using fallen areca leaves. This is unlike other types of biodegradable plates, such as those made from bamboo, which require trees to be felled.

The areca leaves have another advantage - they are highly oxygenated and keep fruits and raw vegetables fresh for extended periods. The versatile plates can also be used in the oven, microwave, and refrigerator, claims Vaibhav.

The pricing per piece starts at Rs 1 and goes up to Rs 40. The founders say Prakritii’s plates take between 12 and 15 days to decompose in a home pit, and cause no harm to the environment.

Manufacturing and retail setup

The founders faced language and cultural differences when setting up their facility in Tamil Nadu. As a small, manufacturing enterprise, it also took time to source raw materials in the required quantities, ensure steady electricity supply, purchase the right equipment, etc.

But Amardeep and Vaibhav persevered, and expanding the use cases of their areca leaf products, grew Prakritii into a Rs 18 crore revenue business.

Amardeep says, “People started understanding how our eco-friendly products could act as alternatives to plastic in various situations. So we started making wooden cutlery, paper glasses, takeaway boxes, and more.”

At present, Prakritii also has a manufacturing unit in Bhadravati, Karnataka. Over 80 ancillary units run by self-help groups (SHGs) also manufacture products for the company.

“Our target customers include wholesalers and distributors, packaging houses, hotels and restaurants, caterers and event organisers, and more. We offer them competitive prices and incentives on volumes,” Amardeep says, adding that Prakritii’s products are also available on ecommerce portals.

For the business, competitors include small manufacturers of similar products. But the entrepreneurs believe their extended product portfolio is a complete solution and is an advantage for Prakritii.

Vaibhav says, “We also hold certifications showing our products comply with norms as per the US and European standards. This helps us pitch our products in the export market.”

COVID-19 impact and future plans

As hotels, cafes, and restaurants were shut and events banned during the pandemic-induced lockdown, Prakritii saw a sharp decline in sales. However, the business had zero debt, claim the founders, and used its reserves and surplus to stay afloat without sacking any employees.

“As things return to normal, we have sustained the business, but the loss has not yet been fully recovered. Now, the pandemic is set to become a game-changer for us as the hospitality industry moves from using reusable crockery to eco-friendly, disposable tableware,” says Amardeep.

In the next five years, the global biodegradable cutlery market is expected to expand at a CAGR of around five percent, according to a ResearchAndMarkets report.

Prakritii now plans to expand its production capacities and diversify its product line to meet this escalating demand for eco-friendly and sustainable cutlery.

The founders say as the world increasingly understands the adverse impact of plastic on the environment, Prakritii is poised to play a role in replacing single use plastic across use cases.

Prakritii- Providing a substitute to eat in Green not just green

Prakritii- Providing a substitute to eat in Green not just green

February 22, 2021

New Delhi: Caring about the environment is, thankfully, becoming a norm as the environment is in a state that needs immediate attention.

Prakritii Cultivating Green ties up with bigger hotel chains around India who have now started considering eco-friendly disposables as key ingredients to their success going forward.

The ongoing pandemic has given leverage to the brand as hotels are now trusting branded eco-friendly disposable companies as compared to common mom and pop stores.

The organic dinnerware company is currently working with hotel chains across their location such as Radisson, Hyatt, Taj Exotica, Taj Sats, Ginger Hotels, First Fiddle F&B Pvt Ltd, Social (Impressario Entertainment & Hospitality Pvt Ltd), Imperfecto, Shangri-La and many more. With a pan-India presence, the company is serving more than 50 hotel groups.

The pressure on hygiene and paranoia over the spread of the coronavirus is slowly leading to a reversal of the central government’s push to phase out single-use plastic. The dependence on disposables, such as styrofoam plastic cutlery, cups, containers, carry bags, and garbage bags, and greater consumption of packaged drinking water as a safety measure to avoid contracting Covid-19.

The hotel chains have taken a step forward to eliminate plastic from their property and are aggressively vouching for eco-friendly and biodegradable disposables.

There are some trends that the hospitality industry is following nowadays post-Covid-19 is that of takeaways instead of Dine-in. Besides, they have also started using disposables for dine-in too, keeping in mind hygiene and safety, which in a way have resulted in elimination of reusable dinnerware trend.

Prakritii helps the hotel chains to reduce styrofoam plastic and have developed more than 100 design variations which have increased the utility of these plates.

The products are being used for packaging dry fruits, chocolates, vegetables, etc giving it an aesthetic look. They have been making waves with their dinnerware made with Arecanut Sheaths (leaf extensions) naturally shed from Areca (Palm) trees and are widely acclaimed in countries like Germany, Sweden, France, USA, Canada, Australia, Eastern Europe countries and a few more to count.

The range of organic dinnerware company further tracks and measures their partners’ performance to make sure they move towards supporting eco-friendly disposables. To enhance the pace of innovation, they have started working on the 5th generation plate machines to design their upcoming products.

Vaibhav Jaiswal, Director & Co-Founder of Prakritii said, “People have realized to live sustainably and the need to promote the eco-system but it all begins with implementation and execution of the choice. The idea is to consume what you need and leave for others. The hospitality chains are demanding innovative solutions to replace plastic. Therefore, they need to develop an internal culture of sustainability. The longevity of businesses today and in the future will depend largely on how human-centric and eco-friendly we can make them.”

Commenting on the no plastic policy, Amardeep Bardan, Co-Founder of Prakritii said, “Eco-friendly alternatives are important for the hospitality industry which are making responsible choices. Hotels are shifting to no-plastic disposables in today’s context.”

World Environment Day: Meet the Delhi heroes who wage war on plastic

World Environment Day: Meet the Delhi heroes who wage war on plastic

June 05, 2018

These heroes include a 9th-grade student who convinces posh restaurants to give up plastic straws and a businessman whose company 'PrakritiI' makes plates and bowls from palm leaves.

For more than 25 years, Ram Nath has lived on the banks of the Yamuna River under a 19th-century iron bridge. Each morning, the wiry man walks a few steps from his makeshift hut and enters the black, sludgy waters of one of India’s most polluted rivers. He is fishing for trash. “This is the only work we have,” said the 40-year-old, sorting through a pile of plastic bottles, bags, and cast-off electronics

While Nath doesn’t think of himself as an environmentalist, he is one of a handful of Delhi residents waging war against the tsunami of plastic threatening to swamp India. They include a 9th-grade student who convinces posh restaurants to give up plastic straws and a businessman whose company makes plates and bowls from palm leaves.

Some fancy restaurants in and around Delhi are doing away with plastic straws and replacing them with paper straws. That’s largely because of Aditya Mukarji, a student who launched his campaign after seeing a video of two veterinarians trying to remove a plastic straw from a turtle’s nose.

Amardeep Bardhan believes he can make a difference. His company, Prakritii, makes plates and bowls from the leaves of south India’s areca palm trees.

In this entire process, we are not harming the environment,” said Bardhan. “We are generating something from the waste, people are loving it, and then it goes back as a waste.”

While Prakritii initially made most of its income from exports to Europe and the US, Bardhan said the market for eco-friendly products is growing in India, especially among younger people who value quality over price. His company generates more than $150,000 in revenue each year.

With more than 15 million people, Delhi and its surrounding cities produce an estimated 17,000 tons of trash daily, according to officials and environmentalists. That requires immense dumps, hills of stinking trash that measure up to 50 meters tall.

Together we can

Together we can

October 04, 2010

A young duo, Vaibhav Jaiswal (23) and Amardeep Bardhan (22) believe entrepreneurs are born and not made. They didn't spend sleepless nights cramming management lessons or discussed avenues abroad over a cuppa coffee. The two prioritised what they wanted to achieve in life and how. The answers rolled out, one after the other. Vaibhav who is originally from Varanasi, UP met Amardeep in the business school where both are studying for their final year. "I wanted to start an enterprise that wouldn't harm the ecological balance. I met Amardeep from Assam who had a similar idea. We explored the options and concluded what we wanted," he says looking at Amardeep for a nod. Amardeep takes over talking about the product that gets them the first prize. "Both of us had participated in many business competitions before. BYST was something different. They not only offered us assistance in terms of counseling, their mentors gave us a good hearing, taking us through the entire process of how the idea would materialise."

Areca nut Leaves Kitchen ware and decorative gift items is what the duo plans to come up with. How and why, they explain. "Industrialsation has left us yearning for time when we would eat food on banana leafs. We thought on the similar lines and came up with the idea of making plates and other household items out of Areca nut leaf," they echo.

A business enterprise is suppose to serve three purposes- it would offer a win-win situation for the initiator, company and society. Vaibhav and Amardeep's business idea does just that. "Disposable plates prepared from the leaves are eco-friendly, odourless, bio degradedable and can be used in refrigerator and microwave.

This is something called an idea, which business schools cannot provide or can they? Provides Vaibhav, "Degree can only enhance capability but it cannot gift you with an idea. It can provide the basic knowledge to strategize, understand market, but it definitely cannot make an entrepreneur out of a regular B school students," says this young lad, who admires Ratan Tata for his leadership abilities.
