The single most common concern we hear from food businesses considering the switch to eco-friendly packaging is a performance question. Not cost, not compliance, not availability. Performance. Specifically: will it keep the food as hot, as fresh, and as intact as what they are using now?
It is a fair question, and it deserves a direct answer — not a marketing response. Here is the honest performance truth about sustainable packaging materials.
Bagasse has a property that most people are surprised by: it is a better insulator than plastic. The cellulose fibre structure traps air in a way that smooth plastic cannot, which means hot food in a bagasse container stays hotter for longer than the same food in a comparably sized plastic container.
Bagasse containers maintain food temperature for 20–30% longer than standard thin-wall plastic containers in controlled tests
The material handles temperatures from -20°C to 120°C without structural compromise
Food does not cool at the contact surfaces the way it does with conductive plastic
The temperature retention advantage is not a small one. In a 40-minute delivery, the difference between food that arrives hot and food that arrives warm is the difference between a five-star review and a three-star review.
This is where the honest answer is more nuanced. Bagasse handles moisture well for most food types — fried foods, rice dishes, dry and semi-dry items perform excellently. For very liquid-heavy dishes — thin gravies, soups, dal — extended transit times can cause some softening of the container base.
The solutions:
Standard bagasse containers are significantly more rigid than comparably priced thin-wall plastic containers. They do not flex under the weight of food, they stack reliably in delivery bags, and they do not distort under heat.
Areca leaf plates are surprisingly robust — they hold heavy Indian meal portions including rice, curry, and fried items without bending. The thickness and density of the pressed leaf material provides more structural resistance than paper plates and comparable resistance to most plastic plates.
Every kitchen has different food types, different delivery distances, and different customer expectations. The right way to evaluate performance is to test with your actual dishes at your actual delivery distance and duration.
Order samples from your sustainable packaging supplier. Fill them with your most liquid, your hottest, and your heaviest dish. Put them in a delivery bag. Wait 35–40 minutes. Open them. That test is more informative than any specification sheet.
At Prakritii, we actively encourage this testing process — and provide samples specifically for it. We know that a customer who has tested and confirmed the performance is a customer who switches with confidence.
The best sustainable packaging does not ask you to compromise on food quality. It proves it does not have to.

India's BRSR (Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting) framework now requires listed companies to disclose packaging sustainability data. This blog explains what that means in practice, how packaging choices affect ESG scores, and why switching to compostable packaging is both a compliance action and a shareholder communication.

In 2026, packaging is a brand's most handled communication — more than a logo, more than a social post. This blog explores how food businesses are using eco-friendly materials, natural textures, and intentional design to create packaging that speaks for the brand — and why sustainable packaging is becoming the premium design choice, not the compromise one.

India has over 1.5 million schools and 50,000+ colleges — each with a canteen generating daily plastic packaging waste. This blog explores why institutional canteens are a critical transition point for sustainable packaging, what materials work at canteen scale, and how the shift to eco-friendly tableware shapes the habits of the next generation.
