Walk into any packaging supplier's catalogue in 2026 and you will find the words biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable applied to dozens of products — sometimes accurately, sometimes aspirationally, and sometimes in ways that are actively misleading.
For a business making a genuine effort to switch to sustainable packaging, understanding the difference between these three terms is not optional. It is the foundation of making packaging choices that actually deliver on their environmental promise.
Recyclable means a material can, in theory, be processed and converted into a new product. It does not mean it will be. India's actual recycling infrastructure processes a fraction of what is technically recyclable.
• Plastic marked with recycling symbols (1–7) is theoretically recyclable — in practice, only PET (1) and HDPE (2) are widely recycled in India
• Paper and cardboard are more reliably recyclable, but contamination from food residue renders many food packaging items unrecyclable in practice
• Glass and metal have the highest actual recycling rates
• Multilayer packaging (plastic-coated paper, laminated pouches) is almost never actually recycled regardless of claims
A packaging item labelled 'recyclable' that ends up in a mixed waste bin — which is where most Indian urban waste goes — will not be recycled. The label reflects a theoretical possibility, not a guaranteed outcome.
Biodegradable means a material will break down through biological processes. The problem: everything breaks down eventually. Plastic technically biodegrades — it just takes 400–1,000 years and breaks into microplastics in the process.
In India, the term 'biodegradable' on packaging has no standardised definition and no regulatory minimum timeframe requirement. This makes it the most abused term in eco-friendly packaging marketing.
• 'Oxo-degradable' plastics are marketed as biodegradable but break down into microplastics rather than organic matter — they are effectively worse than regular plastic
• A product labelled 'biodegradable' without a certification standard or timeframe attached is making a claim that cannot be verified or held to account
• Genuine natural materials (bagasse, areca leaf, paper, birchwood) are biodegradable in a meaningful sense — they break down within months in the environment
Compostable is the most precise and most regulated of the three terms. A compostable product breaks down into non-toxic components within a defined timeframe under defined conditions. The key distinction is that composting produces usable output — organic matter that enriches soil.
• Industrial compostable (EN 13432 in Europe, IS 17088 in India): breaks down within 90 days at sustained temperatures above 58°C in a commercial composting facility
• Home compostable (AS 5810, NF T 51-800): breaks down within 6 months at ambient temperatures in a garden compost heap — the higher standard for genuine everyday usability
• OK Compost HOME certification from TÜV Austria is the most recognised third-party home compostability verification globally
Bagasse packaging certified to IS 17088 is industrially compostable. Bagasse also home-composts at ambient temperatures — a property it shares with areca leaf and birchwood. PLA (polylactic acid) is industrially compostable but does not home-compost — an important distinction often glossed over in marketing.
• 'Biodegradable' with no certification standard cited — meaningless without a timeframe and verification
• 'Eco-friendly' or 'green' with no specific material or certification claim — decorative language, not verifiable claim
• 'Compostable' without specifying industrial or home compostable — these are very different end-of-life stories
• 'Made with recycled materials' without specifying percentage — 1% recycled content technically qualifies
• Carbon offset claims without third-party verification — easy to make, difficult to verify
When evaluating packaging suppliers on sustainability claims, the right questions are:
