Walk into any halwai shop in India in October and you will see the same packaging story playing out at scale. Thermocol trays, plastic wrap, metallic gift boxes lined with polystyrene, and plastic carry bags — all assembled with care for the mithai inside and little thought about what happens to the packaging after.
The Diwali season alone generates thousands of tonnes of sweet packaging waste in India's cities. Most of it is thermocol — which is now banned under India's single-use plastic rules — or non-recyclable plastic. And most of it goes directly to landfill or open dumping within 48 hours of purchase.
In 2026, the mithai packaging conversation is changing. Here is what eco-friendly sweet packaging actually looks like — and why it often makes the mithai look better, not worse.
WHY MITHAI PACKAGING IS A SPECIAL CHALLENGE
MATERIAL BY MATERIAL — WHAT REPLACES WHAT
Bagasse trays are the most direct thermocol replacement for dry and semi-dry mithai — barfi, ladoo, kaju katli, soan papdi, mathri. They are grease-resistant without any coating, hold shape under the weight of stacked mithai, and present cleanly in natural cream tones that read as premium rather than basic.
For moist sweets — gulab jamun, rasgulla, rasmalai — CPLA-lined bagasse or paper-pulp trays with sealed containers are the right choice. The liquid content requires a barrier layer that standard bagasse does not provide, but CPLA-lined variants handle this well.
Cellophane-style wrapping around sweet boxes can be replaced with compostable PLA film or simply eliminated in favour of kraft paper ribbon ties. The unwrapped kraft box with a quality ribbon reads as more premium than the plastic-wrapped alternative in the gifting context that mithai is most often purchased for.
Premium mithai gifting boxes in sustainable materials — FSC-certified kraft board, recycled cardboard with natural lining, jute-wrapped boxes — are a growing market in India's premium sweet gifting segment. The tactile quality of a cloth or kraft-finished box exceeds the cold metallic feel of plastic-laminated boxes in most recipient perceptions.
Kraft paper carry bags at 120+ microns replace plastic bags for sweet shop carry-out — they are already compliant under India's plastic ban at the specified thickness, widely available, and printable for branding.
THE COST REALITY FOR HALWAI AND SWEET BUSINESSES
A bagasse insert tray for a standard 500g mithai box costs Rs 4–8 at small-batch quantities and Rs 2.50–4.50 at volume. A thermocol tray of comparable size costs Rs 1.50–3. The differential is real — but at the margin of a Rs 250–500 mithai box, it is less than 2% of the product value.
For sweet businesses that want to move but are concerned about cost, the practical approach is to start with the gifting range — where the packaging premium is most easily absorbed — and move the everyday range as volume pricing improves.
WHAT PREMIUM MITHAI BRANDS ARE DOING
India's premium mithai brands — Haldiram's, Bikanervala, and newer artisan sweet brands — are actively transitioning gifting packaging to sustainable materials. The positioning benefit is clear: eco-friendly gifting packaging reinforces the premium positioning that these brands need to justify their price points.
At Prakritii, we supply bagasse trays and sustainable packaging inserts suitable for mithai and sweet box packaging — in quantities from small-batch to festival-volume orders.
The mithai inside deserves packaging as thoughtful as the recipe. And the planet deserves packaging that does not outlive the festival.
