The term 'circular economy' has been in policy documents and sustainability reports for years. In 2026, it is beginning to show up in packaging procurement dec
isions — as a practical design principle, not just a theoretical ideal.
For food businesses choosing packaging materials, understanding circular economy principles is not an academic exercise. It changes which materials you prioritise, how you think about end-of-life, and how you communicate your packaging choices to customers and regulators.
A linear economy moves in one direction: extract raw material, make product, use once, discard. Most plastic food packaging follows this model perfectly — petroleum extracted, plastic manufactured, container used for 20 minutes, discarded for 400 years.
A circular economy closes the loop: materials are designed to cycle back into use. For food packaging, this means one of three pathways:
Compostable packaging closes the material loop in the most complete way — the packaging becomes soil, and soil grows the next crop. For agricultural-waste-based packaging like bagasse, this loop is particularly coherent: sugarcane grows, juice is extracted, bagasse becomes packaging, packaging becomes compost, compost feeds the next crop.
India's National Resource Efficiency Policy (NREP) explicitly targets a circular economy approach to packaging waste. The EPR framework — which requires producers to take responsibility for the end-of-life of their packaging — is a circular economy instrument. Certified compostable packaging that goes through composting infrastructure is EPR-exempt, creating a direct policy incentive to design packaging for the compost loop.
For a restaurant or food delivery business, circular packaging thinking changes procurement decisions in concrete ways:
At Prakritii, our bagasse packaging is sourced from sugarcane mills, manufactured with documented processes, certified to IS 17088, and designed to compost at end of life. That is a closed loop — and it is what circular economy packaging looks like in practice.
The most sustainable packaging is not just the one that causes less harm. It is the one that actively returns to the system.

India's BRSR (Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting) framework now requires listed companies to disclose packaging sustainability data. This blog explains what that means in practice, how packaging choices affect ESG scores, and why switching to compostable packaging is both a compliance action and a shareholder communication.

In 2026, packaging is a brand's most handled communication — more than a logo, more than a social post. This blog explores how food businesses are using eco-friendly materials, natural textures, and intentional design to create packaging that speaks for the brand — and why sustainable packaging is becoming the premium design choice, not the compromise one.

India has over 1.5 million schools and 50,000+ colleges — each with a canteen generating daily plastic packaging waste. This blog explores why institutional canteens are a critical transition point for sustainable packaging, what materials work at canteen scale, and how the shift to eco-friendly tableware shapes the habits of the next generation.
