Every company worth following has a point of view about where its industry is going. At Prakritii, ours is built on five years of watching India's sustainable packaging market evolve — from a niche interest to a mainstream procurement consideration — and on the research, regulatory trajectory, and global market dynamics that tell us where the next five years will lead.
Here is our honest view of what sustainable packaging in India looks like by 2031 — and what it means for the food businesses making packaging decisions today.
India's sustainable packaging market crossed USD 10.2 billion in 2026 — growing at a CAGR that exceeds the overall packaging market by 3–4 percentage points. The biodegradable disposable tableware segment, which is where Prakritii operates, is growing faster still — projected to nearly double between 2025 and 2034 according to market analysis from multiple research firms.
By 2031, we believe the sustainable packaging segment in India will represent 30–35% of total food service packaging — up from approximately 12–15% today. That is not a fringe market. That is the mainstream.
The materials that dominate today — bagasse, areca leaf, birchwood, kraft paper — will remain the core of the market through 2031. Their agricultural provenance, cost competitiveness, and proven performance make them the durable foundation.
Alongside them, we expect to see:
We believe India will be the world's primary supplier of agricultural-waste-based sustainable packaging by 2031 — for a simple reason: the raw materials are here, the manufacturing capability is being built rapidly, and the cost structure gives Indian manufacturers a structural advantage over European, North American, and East Asian competitors.
The global demand for compostable food packaging will be primarily supplied by countries with abundant agricultural waste — sugarcane, bamboo, palm — and the manufacturing infrastructure to transform it. India has both. The opportunity to build global supply chain leadership in this segment is open now, and it will not remain open indefinitely.
At AV Prakritii International Pvt Ltd, our five-year vision is to be the partner that food businesses — in India and globally — choose when they are ready to make the transition to sustainable packaging a permanent, operational commitment rather than a one-off decision.
That means product range breadth that covers every food service packaging need. It means certification standards that meet every major export market requirement. It means quality consistency that food businesses can build operations around. And it means the kind of supplier relationship where we understand your kitchen as well as you do.
The transition away from plastic food packaging in India is not a question of if. It is a question of when, how, and with whom. We are building to be the answer to the last part of that question.
The best time to build a sustainable packaging supply chain was five years ago. The second best time is now.
