The Export Edge: Why International Buyers Prefer Suppliers With Green Credentials

July 24, 2026

If you are a packaging manufacturer or food service supplier in India looking to grow export sales, there is a question coming up in more procurement conversations than any other right now. Not 'what is your price?' Not 'what is your MOQ?' It is: 'What are your packaging materials made of — and do you have certification?'

In 2026, sustainability credentials are not a bonus in export markets. They are often the gating requirement.

WHY INTERNATIONAL BUYERS HAVE CHANGED THEIR REQUIREMENTS

Several converging forces are reshaping procurement standards across Europe, North America, Australia, and the Middle East:

•      The EU's Single-Use Plastics Directive has banned or restricted a wide range of plastic          food service items across all 27 member states, with ongoing expansion

•      UK's Extended Producer Responsibility regulations create financial incentives for                  buyers to source compostable over plastic

•      ESG reporting requirements for large corporations now include supply chain                       sustainability metrics — packaging is explicitly included

•      Retail buyers in the US and EU increasingly require suppliers to provide                               environmental product declarations and compostability certifications

•      The global biodegradable packaging market, projected to reach USD 800 billion by             2026, is driven primarily by demand from these markets

An Alibaba.com export market report from February 2026 found that active buyer numbers for compostable packaging surged 83.85% in January 2026 year-over-year. The demand is real and accelerating.

WHAT CERTIFICATIONS INTERNATIONAL BUYERS LOOK FOR

When procurement teams in export markets evaluate packaging suppliers, they are typically looking for:

•      EN 13432 (Europe) — the standard for industrial compostability; required for                       products claiming to be compostable in EU markets

•      AS 5810 / NF T 51-800 (Australia/France) — home compostability standards                       increasingly required in premium markets

•      IS 17088 (India) — the Indian equivalent, recognised for domestic compliance and              increasingly accepted in South Asian export trade

•      OK Compost HOME certification from TÜV Austria — one of the most trusted third-           party compostability marks globally

•      FSSAI food safety compliance — essential for food-contact packaging exports

WHERE INDIA HAS A STRUCTURAL ADVANTAGE

India's agricultural profile gives it a significant cost and material advantage in sustainable packaging for export markets. Sugarcane bagasse — the primary raw material for a large portion of compostable food packaging — is abundant and inexpensive here. Southeast Asian markets report 30–40% lower material costs for bagasse and bamboo-based packaging compared to PLA or PHA alternatives.

Areca palm leaves, grown and harvested primarily in South India, are another export-ready material with strong demand in HoReCa supply chains in the Middle East, Europe, and the US. The HoReCa industry globally is actively transitioning to sustainable tableware as a supply chain decision — not just a values one.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR INDIAN MANUFACTURERS

Packaging suppliers with certified, traceable, export-ready sustainable products are winning business that previously went to European or Chinese manufacturers. The combination of cost competitiveness, material availability, and improving certification infrastructure gives Indian manufacturers a window to establish themselves in global sustainable packaging supply chains.

At Prakritii, our bagasse and areca palm products are manufactured to export-ready standards, with food-safe quality processes designed to meet the requirements of international procurement teams. We have built our operations with the global buyer in mind — not just the domestic market.

In global trade, sustainability credentials are no longer a differentiator. They are the entry ticket. India's manufacturers have everything needed to compete — and win.
