When we talk about sustainable packaging, the conversation usually stays on the environmental side — plastic in landfills, plastic in oceans, plastic bans and compliance. What gets discussed less, but matters just as much, is what plastic packaging does to the food inside it.
The microplastics story is no longer fringe science. It is mainstream, peer-reviewed, and increasingly alarming — and for food businesses, it has direct implications for the food safety narrative around your packaging.
Plastic packaging — particularly when exposed to heat, acidic foods, or UV light — sheds microscopic particles. These particles, smaller than 5mm and often invisible to the naked eye, are called microplastics. They have been found in bottled water, canned food, takeaway containers, and even in the human bloodstream, lungs, and placenta.
For food delivery businesses, the risk vector is specific: hot food placed into plastic containers causes the plastic to leach both microplastic particles and chemical compounds — including BPA (bisphenol A) and phthalates — into the food before it even reaches the customer.
A 2024 study found that heating food in plastic containers for 3 minutes in a microwave released up to 4.2 million microplastic particles and 2.1 billion nanoplastic particles per square centimetre of container surface. The customer reheating their delivery in the original container is the highest-risk scenario.
BPA and phthalates are endocrine disruptors — they interfere with hormone systems and have been linked to developmental issues, reproductive health problems, and increased cancer risk in long-term exposure studies. The WHO has flagged microplastics as a public health concern requiring urgent research.
For a food business, serving food in packaging that leaches chemicals into the meal is a food safety issue. It sits alongside hygiene, temperature management, and ingredient sourcing as a factor that affects what the customer actually consumes.
Bagasse, areca palm leaf, and birchwood do not contain synthetic polymers. They cannot leach BPA, phthalates, or microplastics because none of those substances are present in the material. When heated — whether in an oven, microwave, or simply from hot food contact — they release no chemical compounds into the food.
Bagasse containers are made from cellulose fibre. Areca leaf plates are made from pressed plant material. Birchwood cutlery is exactly what it sounds like. The absence of synthetic chemistry in these materials is not just an environmental benefit — it is a food safety benefit.
In a food culture where customers are increasingly reading labels, questioning ingredients, and paying attention to how their food is prepared and packaged, the question of what your packaging is made of is becoming a customer conversation.
A restaurant that can truthfully say 'our containers are bagasse — no plastic, no microplastics, no chemical leaching' is making a food safety claim as much as a sustainability claim. In the premium delivery market, that claim has value.
